Last night's bike ride finished about 8pm with OrionHealth beating a group of four other teams ino the TA by 10 minutes. Orion elected to sleep immediately after the ride, getting up early to trek the 10 km to the start of the rafting. Others slept out the dark zone at the raft put-in.
The dark zone meant that any lead gained on the bike was reduced to 5 minutes, because the rafts were launched at 5 minute intervals. This stretch of river is Grade 4, much tougher than the Grade 2 or 3 usually encountered on adventure races. Seems everybody had a ball without too much carnage.
Next leg was a 47 km trek through rain forest, the Misty Mountains. Orion Health headed out of the TA 5 minutes ahead of Aussie rivals Blackheart.
Thanks to Annie from Nga Rakau for the details above.
The tracking systems are operating poorly due to the thick forest cover, so not much info is available on progress, except for a report on the race website that OrionHealth was leading Blackheart by 15 minutes at the top of the range
and doing the trailblazing
.
STOP PRESS Orions tracker is back on line, at the TA along with several of their closest rivals
